Chameleon snake discovered

[SinglePic not found]A new snake with the ability to spontaneously change colour has been discovered in the forests of the Heart of Borneo, one of the most biologically diverse regions on Earth, possessing staggeringly high numbers of unique species across all groups of plants and animals.

The half-metre-long venomous snake is normally brown with an iridescent sheen, but can turn white. It is not yet known whether the snake can become other colours too, or what exactly causes the change.

The chameleon is the best known colour-changing reptile, but many other lizards, a handful of snakes and turtles can pull the stunt too. A semi-permanent colour change that happens over days or weeks is more common in snakes – for example during the mating season. However, rare and sporadic examples of “physiological” colour change, caused by rapid changes in pigmented skin cells, have been recorded too.

Discovery Countdown Begins

[SinglePic not found]The US space agency begun a three-day countdown on Wednesday at 5 p.m. (EDT), in preparation for the launch of its next space shuttle mission on Saturday.

During a countdown status briefing at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, NASA Test Director Jeff Spaulding announced that “Discovery is in excellent shape.”

“We’re tracking no issues in our preparation at this point. Our teams have been working tirelessly during this last year to help make this flight and all shuttle flights as safe as possible for the crews,” he said. “As we approach our nation’s 230th birthday, I’m proud to announce that the launch vehicle, the launch and flight teams and flight crew are ready to launch and continue our mission completing the space station.”

Payload Manager Debbie Hahn indicated the payloads have been loaded into the orbiter and are ready for flight.

Bosnian Pyramids confusion

[SinglePic not found]A war of worlds has broken out surrounding the clams regarding the ‘alleged’ Pyramids of Bosnia.

As Cryptoworld readers will recall, Bosnian-American pyramid buff Semir “Sam” Osmanagic claims a four-sided hill in the town of Visoko is Europe’s first known pyramid, and larger than any ever built in Egypt.

Excavations carried out by Osmanagic and his team in April 2006 uncovered what they describe are large stone blocks shaped by human hands and a network of tunnels fronted by a wide, paved entranceway.

Darwin’s tortoise dies aged 176

[SinglePic not found]The giant tortoise, known as Harriet, who was believed to have been one of three tortoises taken from the Galapagos Islands by Charles Darwin on his historic 1835 voyage aboard HMS Beagle, has died aged 176.

It spent a few years in Britain before being moved to the Brisbane Botanic Gardens in Australia’s tropical Queensland state in the mid-1800s, where it was mistaken for a male and nicknamed Harry.

Harriet was believed to be the world’s oldest living tortoise, and one of its oldest living creatures. Despite her longevity, however, Harriet is not the world’s oldest known tortoise.

Are you ready for a Weird Weekend?

Weird Weekend 2005
Weird Weekend 2005

It’s that time of year again! Craziness with the CFZ!

So if you have nothing better to do over the weekend of the 18th-20th August, then I highly recommend you head down to Devon and have some damn find crypto-fun!

Highlights will definitely include some alcohol, giggles, a damn good meal or two and Richard Freeman looking very dapper in his Gambia-Stained Safari Suit… nice!

A recent mailer from CFZ’s Jon concerning the Weird Weekend is as follows:

For the seventh year running, devotees of the weird and wonderful, the strange and supernatural, and the downright odd will be converging into Devon for what has become the biggest event of this type of the year. The weekend of 18-20th August, will see the little North Devon village of Woolfardisworthy (Woolsery), becoming the weirdest village in the land!

The ‘Weird Weekend’ was the brainchild of Jonathan Downes (46), Director of the Centre for Fortean Zoology the world’s largest cryptozoological (mystery animal research) organization.

Summer Solstice

Summer Solstice

Yesterday, was the longest day of the year here in the UK, I say UK as it was still the day before or even tomorrow in some parts of the world! So seeing how we’re now living in Wiltshire, it seemed logical to try and witness the Summer Solstice sunrise at either Stonehenge or Avebury. Stonehenge didn’t seem like the best option, as we felt it would be crowded and a nightmare to get there and park, especially in the dark, so we picked Avebury.

So at around 11 pm on Tuesday, we headed up over Knapp Hill, down past West Kennett and up the Stone Avenue to Avebury. The usual parking was out-of-bounds, so we had to park in a National Trust field with all the other solstice punters. Police and parking wardens wearing bright yellow, reflective vests were everywhere and what little excitement we had drifted away with the wind and light drizzle that was in the air.

UFO Spotted next to Pyramid

Reflected light? Or was it a UFO over the Pyramids?
Mysterious lights and reflective object seen dancing around or hovering above the Pyramids at Giza, Egypt. UFO’s? Or just a trick of the light?

In March a series of pictures captured by pyramidcam.com, appeared to show a highly reflective object above the Pyramids at Giza. In early April, more lights were seen flying above and dancing in a zig-zag pattern.

Pyramidcam.com said the only explanationhave they had come up with, was that it was a reflection off of something below and near the camera, or off of something lying flat on a roof of one of the buildings below us.

Light in sky was definitely a UFO, and had me scared
Allan Brown, resident of Southern Lake Tahoe, Callafornia watched a light in the sky that changed colour from red, orange and amber, moved from side to side and up and down, before disappearing, then reappear again over the lake early Wednesday morning.

Discovery Launch set for 1st July

[SinglePic not found]Nasa have set a launch date of July the 1st, dismissing fears over safety.
Safety officials have said that Discovery
is not safe to fly, and that modifications carried out to prevent chunks of protective foam breaking off where not enough.

Conflicting views on the modifications haven’t helped matters, and Nasa administrator Michael Griffin told a news conference “I can’t possibly accept every recommendation given to me by every member of my staff, especially when they all don’t agree.”

Fair enough I guess, but if I was about to blast seven people into space on a multi million dollar firecracker, I would want to make sure everybody was all agreeing! Any doubts by anybody and I would want to know why and double check, possibly even triple check!
