Giant Earthworms, not Deathworms?

Forgetomori has an excellent collection of Giant Earthworm photos, and links to many more… plus the Mongolian Deathworm gets a mention! Giant earthworms average at 1 metre (100cm) long and 2cm in diameter but can reach 3 metre in length. Several Giant Worm species exists around the world — Tasmania and near Victoria, Australia, Eastern Washington and parts of Idaho in the United States and in the Black Forest region of south-western Germany. Mystery worms panic Chinese herdsmen

An invasion of unidentified worms has forced 50 herdsmen and their families from their grassland homes, taking 20,000 head of livestock with them, in northwest China’s Xinjiang region, state news agency Xinhua said on Friday. The worms are packed up to 3,000 per square metre and chew through the grasslands like lawnmowers, leaving only brown soil in their wake, Xinhua said. The agency described it as the worst plague in three decades in Usu, about [...]

Giant Sea Worm discovered in UK Aquarium

Aquarium staff have unearthed a ‘giant sea’ worm that was attacking coral reef and prize fish. The 4ft long monster, named Barry, had launched a sustained attack on the reef in a display tank at Newquay’s Blue Reef Aquarium over recent months. Workers at the Cornwall-based attraction had been left scratching their heads as to why the coral had been left devastated and – in some cases – cut in half. After staking out the [...]

30 years of Ivan Mackerle

Famed for hunting the Mongolian Deathworm, the self-made Cryptozoologist Ivan Mackerle receives an excellent review in the Prague Post. Mackerle, 65, and his small band of friends have travelled across the Gobi desert, hacked through the jungles of Madagascar, and scuba dived remote Micronesian islands to name but a few. Ivan was one the main influences for our very own expedition to Mongolia in 2005 where we also searched for the Allghoi khorkhoi. You can [...]

Mongolian Deathworm Documentary

After much anticipation, the Centre for Fortean Zoology have finally released a documentary recount of the 2005 expedition to Mongolia where the CFZ and yours truly trekked around the Gobi Desert for four weeks interviewing witnesses, and searching for evidence of the fabled Mongolian Deathworm! Richard Freeman, the CFZ’s zoological director, does a fine job at narrating the two part documentary. Some of the events and facts seem to be a little fuzzy and vary [...]

Are you ready for a Weird Weekend?

Weird Weekend 2005 It’s that time of year again! Craziness with the CFZ! So if you have nothing better to do over the weekend of the 18th-20th August, then I highly recommend you head down to Devon and have some damn find crypto-fun! Highlights will definitely include some alcohol, giggles, a damn good meal or two and Richard Freeman looking very dapper in his Gambia-Stained Safari Suit… nice! A recent mailer from CFZ’s Jon concerning [...]

On the Trail of Ancient Man: Book Review #1

Today is Book Review Day here at Cryptoworld. I’m not sure where the idea came from, but I thought it would be useful to point out a few weird and wonderful books on Adventure Travel, Cryptozoology, Myths, Lost Legends and the like… From a Cryptozoology point of view, On the Trail of Ancient Man appears to contain the first account of the Allghoi Khorkhoi, the Mongolian Death Worm. On the Trail of Ancient Man is [...]

e-Mongol, Chupacabra and Bigfoot

So what’s been happening this week? Well I don’t know about you, but I seem to have miss-placed most of it – its zipped by so fast that I didn’t even realise it was Saturday until a few hours ago. But I guess it’s subjective and for some of you the week probably dragged, and still feels like Monday? Ah, I’m digressing, again… time for some news.
