The amount of trash flowing into the world’s oceans is worse than thought—eight million tons a year, says new study.

A new study has ranked the top 20 plastic polluters and found that most of the plastic entering into the ocean comes from China.

Up to 12.7 million tonnes of plastic waste is washed into the ocean each year, according to the research published today in the journal Science.

The new study identifies the top 20 countries generating the greatest amount of ocean-bound trash. China is top of the list and the United States is 20th, the rest of the list includes 11 other Asian countries, Turkey, five African countries, and Brazil.

The rankings in this chart reflect the largest total amounts of plastic waste flowing into the oceans annually, not the highest per capita amounts. NG Staff; J. L. Wang. Source: Science
