New Tomb of Djehuty discovered in Egypt

Djehuty Tomb

Ceiling and wall of the newly discovered painted burial chamber

A Spanish mission working at Dra Abu El-Naga on the West Bank at Luxor has discovered a second, painted burial chamber in the tomb of Djehuty (TT11). Minister of Culture Farouk Hosni announced the discovery, adding that the Spanish team, led by Dr. José Galán of the National Research Center, Madrid, has been working at the site since 2002.

At the end of their 2008 season, the mission came across a 3 meter-deep shaft inside the burial chamber of Djehuty, an overseer of the treasury and overseer of works during the reign of Queen Hatshepsut (ca. 1479-1458 BC). At the beginning of 2009, they discovered a second burial chamber at the bottom of this shaft. The chamber is decorated on two of its walls, mostly with texts from the Book of the Dead. (see photo) An image of the goddess Nut also adorns the ceiling.

The discovery is remarkable, as only four other decorated burial chambers dating to this period are known. Although the names of Djehuty, his father, and his mother were intentionally erased in the upper part of the monument, they are intact in the newly discovered lower burial chamber. At the entrance to the lower chamber, the Spanish team found five gold earrings and two gold rings, which date to the early- to mid-18th Dynasty and probably belonged to Djehuty or to a member of his family.

Ancient Mummy Warehouse found in Egypt

Saqqara necropolis

View of Saqqara necropolis, including Djoser's step pyramid

A strange warehouse, 36 feet under ground and containing 30 Egyptian mummies has been found at the vast necropolis of Saqqara outside Cairo.

The tomb is thought to be about 2,600 years old and from the 26th dynasty, which was Egypt’s last independent kingdom before it was overthrown by the Persians.

The new tomb was announced by Zahi Hawass, secretary-general of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities and contains 8 mummies in stone coffins, or sarcophagi and another 22 mummies set in iches along the walls.

His assitant Abdel Hakim Karar said it was unusual for mummies of this late period to be stored in rocky niches. “Niches were known in the very early dynasties, so to find one for the 26th dynasty is something rare,” said Karar.

Manchester university helps DNA test Hatshepsut mummy

Hatshepsut's mortuary temple

Hatshepsut's mortuary temple

Preliminary results from DNA tests carried out on a mummy believed to be Queen Hatshepsut is expected to support the claim by Egyptian authorities that the remains are indeed those of Egypt’s most powerful female ruler.

Egyptologists in Cairo announced last month that a tooth found in a wooden box associated with Hatshepsut exactly fitted the jaw socket and broken root of the unidentified mummy.

Now, Dr Angelique Corthals, a biomedical Egyptologist at The University of Manchester, says that DNA tests she helped carry out with colleagues at the National Research Centre in Cairo have promising preliminary results suggesting the identity of the queen.

Dr Corthals, who is based at Manchester’s KNH Centre for Biomedical Egyptology, advised and trained a team led by Dr Yehia Gad in Egypt in techniques of extracting DNA samples from the mummified remains of the mystery female.

No, I haven’t been abducted

Avebury Stones

Avebury Stones

It has been very quiet around here of late and I would like to apologies to everybody who has been wondering where I have been. The short answer is that I haven’t been anywhere, I have simply gone and found myself a 9 to 5 job again which means I haven’t really had time to think about Cryptoworld.

With the first week at work over, I am hopping to formulate a simple routine that will allow me to work, continue investigating weird and wonderful mysteries (especially those in Wiltshire) and to write a few articles every week. It’s not going to be easy, but I will see how things pan-out over the next few weeks – so bare with me!

For now (I know it’s a bit of a cop-out), but here is a short list of links to some stories that I have found interesting over the last week/10 days.

Another Pyramid found in Eastern Europe

ukraine-pyramid.jpg Unlike the alleged Pyramids discovered in Bosnia, the discovery of the ancient pyramidal structures found in Ukraine are actually being called Pyramids as they resemble the Aztec and Mayan ziggurats in South America.

The structures predate the pyramids of Egypt by about 300 years, and appear to have been built to worship a sun god.

With this discovery and the unusual formations found in Bosnia, you have to wonder where the inspiration for the Pyramids in Egypt actually came from!

Bosnian Pyramids confusion

[SinglePic not found]A war of worlds has broken out surrounding the clams regarding the ‘alleged’ Pyramids of Bosnia.

As Cryptoworld readers will recall, Bosnian-American pyramid buff Semir “Sam” Osmanagic claims a four-sided hill in the town of Visoko is Europe’s first known pyramid, and larger than any ever built in Egypt.

Excavations carried out by Osmanagic and his team in April 2006 uncovered what they describe are large stone blocks shaped by human hands and a network of tunnels fronted by a wide, paved entranceway.

Reflected light? Or was it a UFO over the Pyramids?
Mysterious lights and reflective object seen dancing around or hovering above the Pyramids at Giza, Egypt. UFO’s? Or just a trick of the light?

In March a series of pictures captured by pyramidcam.com, appeared to show a highly reflective object above the Pyramids at Giza. In early April, more lights were seen flying above and dancing in a zig-zag pattern.

Pyramidcam.com said the only explanationhave they had come up with, was that it was a reflection off of something below and near the camera, or off of something lying flat on a roof of one of the buildings below us.

Light in sky was definitely a UFO, and had me scared
Allan Brown, resident of Southern Lake Tahoe, Callafornia watched a light in the sky that changed colour from red, orange and amber, moved from side to side and up and down, before disappearing, then reappear again over the lake early Wednesday morning.
