Prehistoric Frilled Shark Sighting

Rare Frillshark

Rare Frillshark

A female frilled shark, sometimes referred to as a “living fossil” because the species has changed little since prehistoric times has been caught and filmed off the coast of Japan.

The rare shark was first spotted by a local fisherman who thought is was a weird eel-fish, so contacted the Awashima Marine Park in Shizuoka.

Staff from the marine park later captured and filmed the shark swimming shortly before it died. It’s thought the shark was already very ill and this was probably the reason why this normally deep sea creature was found at the surface.

The video taken by the Awashima Marine Park can be seen on YouTube [link]. I think you will agree that it doesn’t look well at all, and personally I think it could already be dead and is just drifting with the current!

Mongolian Deathworm Documentary

After much anticipation, the Centre for Fortean Zoology have finally released a documentary recount of the 2005 expedition to Mongolia where the CFZ and yours truly trekked around the Gobi Desert for four weeks interviewing witnesses, and searching for evidence of the fabled Mongolian Deathworm!

Richard Freeman, the CFZ’s zoological director, does a fine job at narrating the two part documentary. Some of the events and facts seem to be a little fuzzy and vary slightly from how I remember them, but overall it’s an interesting account and I highly recommend it.

The two part documentary is available on YouTube (link), or for convenience, you can watch both parts here.

Top 100 Endangered Species

A Saigaantelope

A Saigaantelope

After spotting the Protection for ‘weirdest’ species story on the BBC web site today, I followed the link to EDGE and found an extraordinary website.

Recent studies indicate that almost 75 per cent of the world’s most extraordinary threatened mammals are receiving little or no conservation attention.

If these species go extinct, they will be lost forever. There are no similar animals on earth to replace them.

The EDGE of Existence programme aims to conserve the world’s most Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered (EDGE) species by implementing the research and conservation actions needed to secure their future.

The site has an amazing list of the top 100 endangered and critically endangered species in the world. I highly recommend checking out The EDGE of Existence programme, and consider donating to help fund research and protection of some of the world most unique creatures.

No, I haven’t been abducted

Avebury Stones

Avebury Stones

It has been very quiet around here of late and I would like to apologies to everybody who has been wondering where I have been. The short answer is that I haven’t been anywhere, I have simply gone and found myself a 9 to 5 job again which means I haven’t really had time to think about Cryptoworld.

With the first week at work over, I am hopping to formulate a simple routine that will allow me to work, continue investigating weird and wonderful mysteries (especially those in Wiltshire) and to write a few articles every week. It’s not going to be easy, but I will see how things pan-out over the next few weeks - so bare with me!

For now (I know it’s a bit of a cop-out), but here is a short list of links to some stories that I have found interesting over the last week/10 days.

Bigfoot or big misunderstanding?
Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science
Is it a UFO or a flying saucer?
Night UFO at the Pyramids
Flying object spooks man
Before The UFO and Before The Flying Saucer, There Was “The Air Ship”
Toilet evidence links Dead Sea Scrolls to sect

More weirdness soon… I promise!

Is the Beast of Brookmans Park back?

Are Big Cats loose in the UK?

Are Big Cats loose in the UK?

A CAT the size of an Alsatian was spotted by a dog walker enjoying an evening stroll.

Andrew Hollings was amazed when he saw the massive creature slink out of woodland near Station Road, Welham Green, on Wednesday.

The dad-of-one, of Holloways Lane, said: “It was the size of a Labrador or Alsatian with a long tail.”

The 57-year-old said he had been walking his family’s Yorkshire terrier pup at around 8pm when the cat - possibly the legendary Beast of Brookmans Park - decided to show itself.

Sheep eating Python found in Kuala Lumpur

Sheep eating Python

Sheep eating Python

A Python too fat to escape capture has been found and photographed in Kuala Lumpur.

The Python had allegedly swallowed a pregnant ewe whole and was to big to move.

Snaky tails are nothing new, and this story reminds me of the Unbelievable but true…!!! 13 foot Python bursts open after eating a 6 foot alligator reported last November here on Cryptoworld.

Tasmainian Tiger - 70 years extinct?

Seventy years ago today (September 7th 1936) the last known (captive) Tasmanian Tiger known as “Benjamin” died.

tasmanian_tiger.jpg

Alleged sighting have been reported every since, several this year in fact, but even after numerous searches and at least one $1,000,000 dollar (Australian) reward, no solid evidence has ever been presented to back up the sightings.

Nasa hunting the Chupacabra?

[singlepic=33,200,,,right]There is news that there has been some ‘armed’ searches in Chile and Argentina for a hominoid creature said to be responsible for a spate of animal killings and attacks on humans.

The alleged creature, more commonly know as the Chupacabra is believed to be responsible for more than 200 animal mutilations, including some rather bizarre cases where chickens have had all of their blood sucked out of their bodies!

The Miami UFO Center learned of the searches by farmers in Chile, and by police near the city of Rosario in Argentina. last week, but they had not heard if there has been any searches since.

Canterbury Big-Cat Photographed (NZ)

Pet Camel Dangers

Pet Camel Dangers

Hunters have photographed what looks like a cougar or mountain lion near Canterbury New Zealand.

The now famous big-black-cat of Canterbury has been spotted many times over the last five years, enough times in fact to warrant an official search. But nothing conclusive has ever been found.

The new photos appear to show a large ‘panther’ like animal walking along a deer track, before disappearing into the thick shrub.

Mystery rodent spotted in Lunenburg

New Shark

New Shark

What appears to be a Capybara has been spotted in Lunenburg (believe the spelling is correct?), Massachusetts.

The McDonald family first heard their basset hound “yappinging up a storm”, and when they went to investigate, a large rodent was seen coming out of the woods.

Mr McDonald said “I thought it was an overgrown woodchuck,”. But Mr McDonald’s wife, who watches “The Crocodile Hunter” on cable TV every night, easily identified the animal.
