We had a report last night saving a strange light had been seen over Stockport.

just seen what i first thought was a comet across the sky over stockport. i was just having a cig on the porch when i saw this circular object traveling at a amazing rate of knots from north to south. I live beneath the manchester airport flight path but this was nothing like a plane, it was orange/red in colour and had a large tail with it. was very very peculiar and i am sure it was a comet but yet i cannot find anything that suggests it was. mental!!

Police forces say they have received a number of calls reporting what is believed to have been a meteor.

Reports of a “bright light” and an “orange glow” came in across the north of England and Scotland at about 21:40 GMT amid fears a plane had crashed.

The Met Office tweeted: “Hi All, for anyone seeing something in the night sky, we believe it was a meteorite.”

Durham Police said air traffic control had confirmed there had not been any incidents of aircraft in difficulties

A type of corn that is genetically engineered to make it easier to convert into ethanol was approved for commercial growing by the Department of Agriculture.

The decision, announced Friday, came in the face of objections from corn millers and others in the food industry, who warned that if the industrial corn cross-pollinated with or were mixed with corn used for food, it could lead to crumbly corn chips, soggy cereal, loaves of bread with soupy centers and corn dogs with inadequate coatings

Production tests of Syngenta Seeds Inc.’s new amylase corn at Western Plains Energy LLC showed an 8 percent increase in ethanol production and an 8 percent decrease in natural gas use. It’s enough to make Steve McNinch, general manager and CEO of the Oakley, Kan., plant, never want to go back to a liquid amylase enzyme ever again. “What that means for us is more profits, with less expense,” he said. “And there are no ‘gotchas’ for the plant either.”

Syngenta announced Feb. 11 that it had received full deregulation from the USDA for corn amylase Event 3272, which will be sold under the Enogen seed brand. The corn–which has been a decade or so in the making–has an alpha-amylase enzyme engineered right into it, said Jack Bernens, head of technology acceptance for Syngenta Seeds. It’s the first genetically modified corn seed tailor made for the ethanol industry.

I can’t help feeling it would be better to use the time, money and effort spent on genetic research to find a more efficient way to process the natural products already available – as mentioned by the corn millers and food industry, if this get mixed up and cross pollinated, we could potentially loose a valuable food source!

Prison guards could soon stop fights with a harmless tool that shoots a laser-like beam, video game-style, down into a room where trouble is brewing. The Assault Intervention Device (AID), funded by the National Institute of Justice, is still large and unrefined but will soon be installed for trial in at least one prison, the Pitchess Detention Center in Los Angeles County.

The AID directs an energy beam, which is in the invisible millimeter wavelength, that penetrates just deep enough beneath the skin to make the target’s pain receptors shout. The sensation is a burn like touching a hot stove or an iron. It only lasts up to 3 seconds – the AID controls automatically shut the beam off to prevent shooting for longer without resetting the trigger finger. The beam can hit a target about 100 feet away, and is about as wide as a CD

The Assault Intervention Device appears to be just a rebranded Active Denial System (ADS), which was developed by the U.S. Military and classified as a non-lethal, directed-energy weapon!

The weapon uses a strong millimeter-wave transmitter primarily used for crowd control (the “goodbye effect”). Some ADS such as HPEM ADS are also used to disable vehicles. Informally, the weapon is also called Heat Ray!

Raytheon a major American military contractor and supplier of military and commercial electronics is currently marketing a reduced-range version of this technology (possibly the AID or similar).

The ADS was deployed in 2010 (unconfirmed reports have suggest much earlier) with the United States military in Afghanistan, but was withdrawn without seeing combat (this is allegedly untrue with a number of Afghanistan witnesses and victims claiming the military did actually use the weapon).

Many aspects of the ADS research are classified, but there has been some independent evaluation. According to public releases, there have been over 10,700 “shots” by ADS, and has been deemed safe for use. A Penn State Human Effects Advisory Panel (HEAP) has published findings of research showing.

• no significant effects for wearers of contacts or other eyewear (including night vision goggles)
• normal skin applications, such as cosmetics, have little effect on ADSʼs interaction with skin
• no age-related differences in response to ADS exposures
• no effect on the male reproduction system
• developing cancer from exposure is “very unlikely”
• no deleterious effect on birth defects
• the limit of damage was the occurrence of pea-sized blisters in less than 0.1% of the exposures.

The HEAP has concluded that ADS is a non-lethal weapon that has a high probability of effectiveness with a low probability of injury.
The ADS is currently only a vehicle-mounted weapon, though U.S. Marines and police are both working on portable versions.

ADS is just one of many secret beam weapons being developed by the military. Deemed safe in the right hands may sound ok, but what would happen if such technology ended up in the wrong hands?

In another terrible turn of events, last night a magazine in Dahshur was broken into; it is called De Morgan’s. This magazine contains large blocks and small artifacts.

The looters appear to have entered from the glass dome on the roof of the museum with ropes with the intention to loot antiquities. Civilian and army soldiers surrounded the museum and detained several looters.

Dr. Zahi Hawass, Director for the Supreme Council of Antiquities in Egypt, said the vandals did not manage to steal any of the museum’s antiquities, and that the prized collection was now safe and under military guard.

Egyptian army soldiers have also taken up position in front of the Giza pyramids.

In times of unrest (good or bad), there is always great concern for a countries antiquities. Hopefully nothing serious will happen to the monuments and treasures of Egypt.

Conkers from the Horse Chestnut Tree

A common insect called the leaf miner moth (Cameraria ohridella) does more long-term damage to conker trees (horse chestnut) than thought.

Previously the moth was thought to cause only cosmetic damage, but a study published in the journal Urban Forestry & Urban Greening shows the moth larvae attack the tree’s leaves, reducing their ability to capture sunlight and turn it into food.

This loss in ability to produce energy, dramatically reduces seed size and quality, potentially stunting the tree’s growth.

The horse chestnut tree was first introduced to the UK in the 1600s. Its white flowers are now a common sight in UK towns, cities, parks and woodlands. However, over the past eight years, this tree has been under attack by the leaf miner moth Cameraria ohridella.

The horse chestnut leaf miner (Cameraria ohridella) is a leaf-mining moth of the Gracillariidae family. It was first observed in Macedonia in northern Greece in the late 1970s, and was described as a new species in 1986. Its larvae are leaf miners on the Common Horse-chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum), causing significant damage to the appearance of the trees.

The larva digs its way into the leaves of the tree, damaging the leaves and stunting growth. Infected leaves are covered in small brown patches which spread rapidly across the entire tree, giving an autumnal appearance. Eventually the leaves die and drop off; when new ones grow they are again infected. This cycle can repeat itself several times in one season.

Cameraria ohridella has now been found in Ukraine, England, Belgium, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Serbia, Slovenia, Sweden and Switzerland. Although it thrives in warmer climates, where it can achieve as many as six generations a year. Its natural enemies are parasitic wasps, but there are few of the required species in Europe, meaning there is next to no natural control.

The moth grows up to 5mm long, their forewings are shiny, bright brown with thin, silvery white stripes, the hindwings are dark grey with long fringes. Each female moths lays between 20 and 40 eggs singly on the upper surface of leaves, and once these hatch 2–3 weeks later, the larvae develop through five feeding phases (or instars), two prepupal phases and one pupal phase. The first stages create a small cavity (or mine) in parallel to the vein in the leaf and are considered to be “sap sipping” rather than “tissue feeding”. By the third instar, the larvae create a mine approximately 8mm in diameter; this is further expanded by later instars until one mine can cover several square centimeters. The larvae start to pupate around four weeks after they hatch and emerge as adults around two weeks later.

Control and Prevention
There are few natural predators of the larval stages. Observations have shown that blue tits (Parus caeruleus), great tits (Parus major) and marsh tits (Parus palustris) do feed on the larvae. Between them, they are thought to predate between 2 and 4% of the larvae. The southern oak bushcricket (Meconema meridionale) has also been found to predate Cameraria ohridella, consuming around 10 larvae per day. Overall the predation by the southern oak bushcricket is insignificant compared to that by birds. Experiments with the predatory mite, Euseius finlandicus, bush crickets, ladybirds and lacewings, found that none predate Cameraria ohridella.
